Island Hopping from Oban: Mull, Iona, Kerrera, and Beyond
One of Oban’s biggest appeals is its role as a ferry hub. Known as the “Gateway to the Isles,” it’s the launch point for adventures across the Inner Hebrides.
Mull
A 45-minute ferry takes you to Mull, home to colourful Tobermory (famous from TV’s Balamory) and rugged landscapes perfect for hiking. Wildlife lovers can spot sea eagles, otters, and dolphins.
Iona
From Mull, it’s a short hop to Iona, where you’ll find the famous abbey — one of Scotland’s oldest religious centres and a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The beaches here are white sand and turquoise waters, more Caribbean than Hebridean on a sunny day.
Kerrera
The closest island to Oban, just a five-minute ferry ride, Kerrera is ideal for a half-day trip. Walk to Gylen Castle, perched dramatically on a cliff, and enjoy views across the bay.
Practical Travel Tips
- Book ferries early in summer, especially if travelling with a car.
- Day trips are easiest to Kerrera or Mull; Iona deserves a full day.
- Bring layers — weather changes quickly on the west coast.
Back in Oban
After your island adventures, you’ll want somewhere central and welcoming to rest. MacGregor’s at Whisky Vaults is just steps from the ferry terminal, offering hearty food, live music, and a wide whisky selection — the ideal place to share stories from your day.
